Planning
Category: Attribute
Planning a project may involve collecting feedback from users or customers in order to improve a service. You might also look at sets of figures to see whether or not a project is financially viable. Planning skills are therefore important because:

Without any type of skills in planning, there is no value in employing you.
Being able to plan is essential in a company since it can be applied to planning business trips, knowing how much of the company budget can be spent on advertising or marketing new products, or even just be able to plan the next week’s meeting agenda.

Dependable/Reliable
Category: Skill
It is very important that an employer feels that they can depend on a staff member and their contribution to the organisation because:

If they can’t depend on an employee then they should review the reasons why they are not reliable and try to help them over come their problem, the last thing an employer wants to do is let someone go that has a future in their company.

If they know the employer can depend on them then this can be an incentive to work harder and more efficiently, as well as a reason to show up for work each day. Their contribution may prove to be the piece that was missing from the company workforce such as someone that doesn’t require training for the task the employer needs.

Becoming a ‘greener’ organisation
Category: Skill
The company policy may involve car sharing, facilities for gym membership and recycling. This is important because:

They need employees that will help not only to help them reduce the amount of waste they produce but also reduce the environmental pollution caused by the cars of the workers to drop, by convincing them to adopt the car sharing plan.

Time management
Category: Skill
Being able to draw up a schedule of tasks and prioritise events is important because:

Time management is an easy skill to learn but a difficult skill to apply, an employee that can use this skill is very valuable and precious to their employer. Being able to manage their time means they are more likely to be up to date with any work they have been assigned and can maximise the actual quality of the work produced.

Problem-solving
Category: Attribute
Being able to work through and demonstrate good, problem-solving techniques will ensure that problems are recognised early. This is important because

If an employee has a problem with another colleague, that could reduce the amount of work produce between them. Being able to spot a situation like this early is important as it would prevent time and work being lost on disagreements that have no real purpose.

Likewise if the problem was a computer virus, locating and removing it early would prevent any data being deleted or copied to an unknown source that could be a hacker.

Promoting an organisational brand or image
Category: Skill
Using correct company literature and letterheads, complying with the company dress code ensures that

Everyone at the company promotes the right message and gives a professional impression to any customers. This is also a way that the company might use to decide who was eligible for a promotion and who wasn’t.

  1. Hi Jonathan and thank you for your blog. Overall, the content for merit part is fine. Well done. There are a few errors that I would like you to correct (see below). When you have done this, please resubmit by the 12th of November.
If they can’t depend on an employee there is little reason to continue to employ them.
This is a bit of depressing viewpoint. Employers wouldn’t know if the staff was not dependable until after they had been employed.
will help not only to help them should be will not only help them
Problem-solving This part doesn’t seem to be finished.
